7 Week Class with Ayla Mullen
Thursdays, March 2–April 13, 2023
4:00pm–6:30pm
Join Ayla Mullen for a ceramic adventure in making sets! This class is ideal for people who have worked on the wheel before, and want to focus on a specific project over 7 weeks: designing and creating their own unique vision of a matching set, made on the wheel and designed for beauty and function.
We will cover techniques on the wheel to throw consistent, matching forms; throwing and hand-building trays to hold the items in your set; incorporating formal elements across different shapes, and integrating disparate objects through form and decoration with a unifying theme. We will also cover a few basic surface design techniques, including slip and underglaze application, carving, and other specific topics by student interest. The class will be structured around the natural progression of the design process, from gathering inspiration and sketching ideas on paper and in clay, to creating each part of your set on the wheel, trimming and finishing it, and decorating each piece to create a cohesive overall design. We will talk about different approaches to the concept of a “set;” explore historical pottery for examples and inspiration, and discuss how to approach designing pouring vessels, cups, and other objects in your particular set designs for optimal functionality.
We will bring in inspiration from outside sources, and students are encouraged to use a sketchbook to collect and explore ideas, and to accumulate a “visual briefcase” of inspiring images and/or objects to influence their work. Students are encouraged to try one or all of the techniques introduced in class, and most of all to follow their own inspiration; Ayla will spend some time in the first couple of classes working with students individually to set goals and identify personal set projects. Classes will begin with a 30 minute demonstration, and the remainder of class time will be for students to work and receive one-on-one support.
