June 6 – August 30, 2019

The Jansen Art Center is pleased to welcome Cecilia Karoly-Lister to the Fine Arts Gallery for an exhibit this summer. The exhibit, Itch, opens with a reception from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 6.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“I drowned my clothes because I was tired of wearing them, I painted them to confront their inflated significance in my life and on my body. Through loving, arduous, artistic processes I meditate on gender identity and performance in a two part exhibition. I painted the first half of the show exploring personal un-comfortability and disassociation with binaries and my body. Progressing, the second half celebrates the comedy and beauty of existing between and amongst binaries — gender euphoria.”

“Itch” invites the viewer to critically consider the elevated status of clothing in defining gender. It also chronicles the emotional struggle, acceptance, and eventual delight in finding one’s body as home.
