Artist Statement

“My painting and printmaking focus on the dynamic intersection of agricultural farmland and estuarine tidelands. The tension between the beauty of our “place” – its sloughs and intertidal mudflats – and the historic and omnipresent demands placed upon it create a delicate balance that may be invisible to a casual visitor but becomes vividly evident as we learn more about where we live.

For several years, I have collected birds’ nests found within this landscape and am keenly interested in the energy, centrifugal force and gravity of these objects as well as the primitive responses of shelter, refuge and loss they represent. How can something so fragile be so strong?”
