Expired Sgraffito/Mishima
6 Week Class
Dates: Wednesdays, October 6–November 10, 2021
Time: 4:30–6:30pm
Instructor: Ruth Hesse
Sgraffito and Mishima are two surface design techniques that play well with each other. In Sgraffito, carving through a layer of slip or underglaze reveals the clay beneath. With Mishima, lines are carved or impressed, creating channels for inlaying color. Students will work with colored slips and underglazes, and learn two approaches to Mishima.
The first five weeks of class will include demonstrations and assistance with projects as needed. The sixth week of class will be an opportunity for students to share their work with each other.
This class is intended for students who have some prior clay experience. Students will be encouraged to make multiples of something such as a bowl, mug, or tile, so they can try both surface techniques and see what appeals to them.
