Expired Schimmel Showcase: Chet Noll

The May 31 Schimmel Showcase, like all Schimmel Showcases, will feature the Jansen Art Center’s Schimmel Concert Grand Piano. It will be held upstairs in the Chamber Hall where coffee, tea and treats are provided. But what is a Schimmel? What makes it special? Chet Noll will talk about this piano and its history and demonstrate the variety of sounds, textures, and imagery that a world-class instrument like this can create. Can we imagine this piano could sound like a guitar, a harpsichord, a harp, or a tympani? Could it evoke images of moonlight, water, a day in the mountains, celebrations on a Greek island, or a mysterious poem? Perhaps even the shivers elicited looking at a painting of a Roman sepulcher in an art gallery?

Through the works of a dozen different composers, Chet will perform works that showcase the amazing abilities of this magnificent instrument. Its sheer power and brilliance is equally matched by its ability to produce tiny, lovely, intimate sounds. Together with one’s imagination, it can take the listener to far away places.
