March 7 – May 31, 2019

The Jansen Art Center is pleased to welcome Neil Berkowitz to the Chamber Hall for an exhibit of his work this spring. The exhibit, Intersections / Depth Connections: Photographs by Neil Berkowitz, opens with a reception from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 7.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Neil Berkowitz seeks images that could not be created without digital tools but that begin with a camera. He applies digital precision to traditional photographic practices and darkroom techniques to close the gap between what we see and what our digital technology sees. He has recently begun incorporating the more marginal film techniques of multiple exposure and slow shutter to his work with his digital photographs.

His works ultimately retain their photographic essence as captured and represented light, treating the textural footprints of pixel-based production as elements of composition. They explore art’s ability to influence modes of observation and interpretation in everyday life, notions of place and the individual’s creative processing of personalized connections into a web of place, and the opportunities offered by the unique depth of digital tools to see the commonplace in different and deeper ways. At the level of a background presence, his work generally prods viewers to approach photographs not as records but as made things.

Originally from the northeast, Neil has lived in Seattle for 30 years. A former potter, he recently added printmaking to his artistic production. He studied photography in the journalism school at Syracuse University and the New School.
