3 Day Virtual Workshop with Christen Mattix
Thursday-Saturday, July 7-9, 2022
10:00–11:30am
In this inspiring workshop, we will focus on the beautiful and expressive human face. Painting from your own photograph, you will learn how to create a grisaille—or monochromatic—portrait in acrylic. This workshop lays the foundation for successful portrait painting, building your confidence in composition, facial anatomy, and shading. All classes will be held on Zoom with time dedicated to step-by-step demos, discussions and individual painting time.

MATERIALS TO BRING
Supplies:
- Photo to paint – For best results, choose a high resolution, detailed, and sharply-focused photograph of a face/head. This could be someone you know, or someone whose face caught your eye in a magazine, for example. Make sure it has clearly defined shadows and light areas on the face. Enlarge this photo on a color photocopier. Set the color copier to the Black and White setting.
It is a good idea to bring two different enlarged images to class so you have something to choose from. - Acrylic Paint: Titanium White paint. Choose ONE dark color to mix with white: Mars Black/Prussian Blue/Raw Umber/Black/Dioxazine Purple/Phthalocyanine Green/Burnt Umber etc.
- Acrylic Brushes: 1 round brush: size 5. Flat brush: size 12, size 20
- 24 inch Ruler or yardstick
- Painting Surface: 16 x 20 inch paper (or larger) primed with 2 coats of white acrylic paint or gesso to make it stronger
