Eric Likkel – Clarinet Cowboy & Co.
Saturday, July 2, 2022
7:30–9:30pm

This dynamic trio features Seattle musicians Eric Likkel on clarinet/sax, Ben Thomas on vibraphones, and Tim Carey on bass. Drawing from jazz and beyond, the evening will range between standards and originals by all three members.

Eric Likkel is an active woodwind player in the Seattle region, performing across a wide range of genres. He is featured live and on recordings with Origin Records, the Earshot Jazz Festival, Ballard Jazz Walk, Lynden Music Festival, Valse Café Orchestra, Smiling Scandinavians, Hereward, Ben Thomas Tango Project, and his own Crown Hill Combo. As performer, arranger, and composer, Eric contributes new chamber works through the TORCH Quartet, and helped launch the Common Tone Music Festival in Moscow, Idaho. Before coming to Seattle in the mid 1990s, Eric graduated from Cincinnati Conservatory. He played with Cedar Point Live Shows, the Toledo Jazz Orchestra, Ernie Krivda’s Fat Tuesday Big Band in Cleveland, and was a member of the American/European Rome Festival Orchestra in Italy. As a music instructor, Eric has more than 30 years of experience teaching clarinet and saxophone. He is currently an adjunct music faculty member at DigiPen Institute of Technology where he teaches improvisation skills, coaches ensembles, and lectures on American popular music.

Dr. Ben Thomas is one of the most in-demand vibists in the Pacific Northwest. Known for combining virtuosic technique with flowing lyricism, Thomas’s music spans from pyrotechnic improvisations to delicate soundscapes. In addition to leading jazz and tango ensembles, he performs as a sideman on mallets, percussion, and bandoneon with a wide variety of groups throughout the United States, including the Jovino Santos Neto Quinteto and the Atlas Tango Project. He currently has five albums of original compositions available on Origin Records: “Triskaidekaphobia”, “The Mystagogue”, “The Madman’s Difference”, “Yet What Is Any Ocean…”, and “Eternal Aporia”.

Tim Carey is a multi-instrumentalist, bassist, and composer from Seattle Washington. Carey has played bass professionally since 2003 touring and performing in over 30 U.S. states, Canada, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea with musicians such as Jovino Santos Neto, Patrinell Wright and the Total Experience Gospel Choir, Groove for Thought, Adam Rapa, Brothers of Soul, J.J. Barnes, Harvey Wainapel, as well as his own groups. Tim currently serves as program manager at Jazz Night School in Seattle WA. He taught music theory, ear training, and composition at Cornish College of the Arts from 2011-2020, guitar and music production at Bellevue College from 2014-2018, and directed the jazz band at Seattle’s Holy Names Academy since 2012. Tim has given clinics and workshops at colleges and high schools around the country including Cal Arts, University of North Texas, UC Greely, and Cal State Long Beach. In addition to an active teaching schedule, Tim is also an active composer and arranger, focusing on music for media as well as his own creative projects and commissions for college and high school bands and choirs.
