Lyz Staman
As a traveler during this pandemic, one must travel by memory to experience past favorite places.
So, these paintings are my pandemic travel memories of Penang Island, Malaysia.
A mix of Malay, British, Chinese, and Indian cultures, the people of this incredible place combine traditional and modern ways in their daily lives.
With a blurred, dark palette of The Temple Lesson, I created the dark smoky mood of the Chinese temple and the hundreds of little joss sticks creating the only lights.
The opposite is the glaring, bright outdoor palette of The Penang Boatman, portraying his intense and weathered expression.
The Temple Lesson
oil
24″ x 30″
$400
On the Horizon
oil on canvas
48″ x 48″
$3000
Gene Jaress
Gene Jaress has been a working artist for 50 years, many of those spent as a master jeweler, now spent working at printmaking, painting and sculpture. His ability to think dimensionally comes into play with the woodblock prints, creating up to 10 blocks for each print. In his paintings, dimension is achieved with many thin layers of color creating a luminous atmosphere.
These works document a place in time, the Skagit River Valley of northwest Washington State in the second decade of the 21st century. The series of limited-edition woodblock prints reflect the light and color and geographic character of the farmed land at the western edge of the Cascade Mountains, down the Skagit River to the Salish Sea. The crow monoprints speak for themselves as crows always do. The paintings show two aspects of the valley. On the Horizon captures the setting sunlit clouds across the valley sky from his home close to Mount Cultus. Fires Upriver – Smoke at Sunrise references the Newhalem Fires of 2015 as smoke drifted into the valley, obscuring the sun.
