The Jansen Art Center is pleased to welcome photographer Norman E. Riley to the Library Workshop Gallery for an exhibit of his work this summer. The exhibit, Artist-In-Residence at Glacier National Park, opens with a reception from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 7.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“I found myself confronted with astonishing views that afforded moments when nothing existed outside my connection with the subject before my lens. I came to understand that the great miracle and wonder of photography does not occur in the developing tray as many have suggested. It occurs within the photographer.”
Norman E. Riley is an American photographer working in the f/64 style. His photographs are held in the permanent collections of the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art in San Luis Obispo, CA, the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, WA, the Portland Art Museum in Portland, OR, the Lyman Museum in Hilo, HI, the Department of Special Collections at the University of California in Davis, CA, Everett Community College in Everett, WA, and the Fernie Museum in Fernie, BC among other places. He currently lives in Bellingham, WA where he continues to make photographs using traditional materials and processes.
In 2015, he was artist-in-residence at Glacier National Park in Montana. During his four-week residency, he created 395 negatives. Several of Riley’s photographs from that residency were published in a special edition of “View Camera” magazine in 2015, and twenty-four were printed for “Peace Park Perspectives,” an exhibit at the Fernie Museum in British Columbia in 2016 that will travel to the Hockaday Museum in Kalispell, Montana for exhibition later this year. This exhibit at the Jansen Art Center features 18 images from the body of work created during his time as artist-in-residence at Glacier National Park.
