Curator’s Note
When the concept of partnering with the Jansen Art Center to present an epic exhibition of nature photography was first presented, I intuitively knew that it was a great idea. As publisher/editor of Adventures Northwest Magazine, I immediately recognized the synchronicity: Our mission is to give expression to the transformative beauty of the natural world through words and images, to help our readers discover—or re-discover—deep connections to the natural world. And as a life-long nature photographer myself, I’ve been blessed with an enduring passion for the beauty of the world around us – and especially the sublime landscapes of Cascadia where I have lived for more than 30 years. Seeing the exhibition come to life has completely validated those first impressions. These remarkable images offer an opportunity to experience the landscapes in which we live through the eyes of some of our most celebrated local artists, many of whom have – like me – made capturing the ephemeral beauty of Cascadia their life’s work. They bear witness to the ways in which we are find solace in beauty and are transformed by forging deep connections to the natural world. In stressful times, these shared connections offer us an opportunity to revitalize ourselves, regain perspective, and nourish hope.
It is with a sense of humility and gratitude that we offer Illuminations to the community.
