Expired Test, Test, Test! Guided Experimentation in Clay

If you have spent any time at the Jansen Art Center ceramics studio, you have heard the advice to “test, test, test!” Tests help you prepare for the moment when you are ready to do the surface design on a piece that you have invested a lot of time in. You want to use materials and processes that are reliable. Tests help you discover combinations and processes that will make your work uniquely your own.

This is a class for people who have questions about what materials work well together, and the order of operations for various techniques and what sorts of results those will give.

Some ideas you might wish to explore include product comparisons, firing environments, underglazes versus colored slip, or different ways of achieving a certain effect.

As a group, we will discuss various ways to research and keep track of your data so that you can become your own expert. Don’t forget, you get free open studio time when you are enrolled in a class!

MATERIALS FEES:  None

Although this class is all about experimentation, we are limited to using Oregon White clay, or the speckled reprocessed clay available at the ceramics studio. Students will need to purchase their own outside glazes and underglazes if they do not wish to use materials available in the studio.

PREREQUISITES: Curiosity and some experience with clay
