1 Day Workshop with Ayla Mullen

Saturday, May 21, 2022
1:00–4:30pm

Are you interested in creating detailed, elegant ceramic surfaces with line drawings and inlaid textures? Come spend a day learning the Mishima inlay technique on clay! Mishima is a traditional Korean and Japanese surface design technique; a way of drawing by inlaying a slip or underglaze of a contrasting color into unfired, leather hard clay. We will spend an afternoon learning how to carve and inlay our own designs into clay, with demonstrations and one-on-one support from Ayla, who has used the Mishima technique to inlay detailed botanical designs into her work for years. Students will leave the workshop with at least one fully inlaid piece, and all the knowledge they need to continue exploring the technique on their own.

This workshop is open to students of all experience levels. Students may bring their own unfired, leather-hard greenware to decorate during the workshop if they already have a studio practice of their own. Please keep in mind, pieces must be leather hard and not bone dry! There will also be access to two leather hard, slab-built ceramic tiles per student for students who do not have their own work to decorate. Pieces completed in the workshop will be bisque fired after the workshop, with the option for the slab-built tiles to be glaze fired with a clear glaze. Students can return to pick up their work once it’s been fired.
