Upcoming Phantasies in Polymer Clay: Journal Covers
2 Week Class with Jessica Mase
Saturdays, September 14 & 21, 2024
1 – 4 pm
For our journey into journal covers, we will start with a blank of clay that I have formed to the size of an A5 journal. I will bring in a few inspirational sketches/templates to follow along with. We will plan what we want our piece to look like and rough sketch it onto the clay. Using chalk pastels, we will color and shade our base layer. Then we will use mostly additive sculpting techniques to achieve our desired picture. I like to include at least one tree, so that we can learn how to make and texture both realistic and whimsical faux wood/bark. I also like to include some sort of stone, variations of flowers, bushes, as well as individual leaves, in order to give the student a chance to learn some neat techniques. I am also a big fan of using glow-in-the-dark elements in my work, so I love to show how to create shooting stars or fireflies using oven-curing glue and glow powders. Day One will be sketching and roughing in our overall picture, there will also be a variety of mixed media elements such as beads, glass, moss, crystals, chains, and stones available to add in. Day Two will be details including texture and shading individual pieces, properly curing (which takes 45 minutes), and sealing if necessary. Overall, students will dive head first into the world of polymer clay and mixed media art and learn lots of fun and interesting techniques and go home with a beautiful piece of hand sculpted art.
