Expired Plant Based
March 3 – April 30, 2022
For the first themed community exhibit at the J since 2015, it was important to us to select a theme that was both approachable and interesting enough to push emerging and experienced artists out of their box. Natural beauty is all around us, we practically couldn’t avoid it if we tried. But how can we go deeper with the idea of nature and art?
Plant Based invited artists to submit work with subjects of nature, botany, and flora, pieces made from organic materials and those which incorporate plant matter in the process. The theme was open for interpretation and the artists delivered a dazzling array of takes, with 104 pieces in the final juried exhibit.
You’ll see work of extreme precision such as in Nikki Furlong’s cross-sections of trees made entirely out of paper, a full circle statement in more ways than one. Global warming threatens animal species across the globe and conversations around it can be held via the medium art, as Kelton Nix’s ink and colored pencil pieces. Dia Calhoun’s magical, fantastical sculptures are intricately constructed, each with its own distinct personality, and situated under hand blown glass cloches. Explore work made with unique creative processes like Suzanne Steel’s Van Dyke print. Behold the dynamic wonder of HyunJu Padilla’s abstract painting Wild Fields at Jeju Island, measuring 8’ long and depicting the wild flowers and vegetation seen along hikes up South Korea’s tallest mountain.
Thank you for joining us for Plant Based.
Artwork can be purchased through our Gallery Shop and will be available for pickup when the exhibit closes.
