Expired Learning Encaustic: Intro to Painting with Wax

This class introduces students to the basics of encaustic painting, an ancient medium that uses beeswax, damar resin, and pigment to create paintings. Interest in the medium of encaustic has been reviving over the past few decades, as artists seek to work more with natural materials. This class will cover the basics of encaustic painting, including the history of the medium and contemporary usage, the dos and don’ts of working with the materials, color mixing, substrates, and various tools and techniques for working with the paint.
This class is for beginner students, or those with some experience looking for a refresher course in encaustic.

MATERIALS TO BRING
a sketchbook.
Optional materials:
• Collage materials/ephemera/photographs/photocopies
• Any natural wood substrate students may be interested in using as a base for painting. It must be non-treated wood, dry-cured, clean, and, ideally, sanded smooth.
