Upcoming Intro to Celtic Music Performance

4-week Class with Mel Birch
Wednesdays, July 9 – 30, 2025
3 pm – 5 pm
An introduction to common Celtic Music styles and tunes for musicians wishing to explore this genre for the first time. Each session will feature a style (Jig, Reel, Air, etc.), and one or two tunes from that style.
Our goals for you? 1. See how fun this music is to play with other musicians and instruments. 2. Show you where to find sources of more music. 3. Learn some of the “Rules of the Road” for playing in organized Celtic music sessions. 4. And finally, where you might find more sessions.
All written music will be provided for these sessions.

PREREQUISITES
While not mandatory, music reading ability will be very helpful, as tunes will be presented in standard music notation. Participants must have a playable instrument. Melody instruments should be “C” instruments: a C in the musical notation is played and sounds as a C on the instrument. Typical C instruments used in Celtic music can include violins, flutes, guitars, mandolins, tin whistles. Non C instruments, such as Bb trumpet and Bb clarinet, require music that is transposed to their key. Participants should be moderately proficient on their instruments.
