Expired Etching to Create Copper & Brass Jewelry
2 Day Workshop with Cynthia Topp
Thursdays, February 1 & 8, 2024
5:45-8:45pm
In this two-evening workshop, you’ll discover etching, the ancient process of covering certain areas of a piece of metal with a ‘resist,’ and then submerging it in a chemical bath so that the uncovered molecules are etched away. You’ll experience the joy of starting with a design on paper, photocopying it to a special plastic film, heat transferring it to a piece of brass or copper, and then watching that design appear on the metal. There’s nothing more magical than removing the ‘resist’ from the metal and seeing the design! You’ll also learn how to oxidize (darken) the metal so that your designs stand out from the background.
In the class, you can either draw your own designs or choose from a selection of pre-drawn patterns. You’ll be able to create a cuff bracelet, an adjustable ring, a pendant, or a pair of earrings. Most students will leave with two or more new jewelry items! No experience is needed!
