Expired Cold Connections: Rivets & Simple Prongs
2 Day Workshop
Dates: Saturday & Sunday, September 25–26, 2021
Time: 11:00am–6:00pm
Instructor: Leah Meleski
In this 2-day workshop, students will learn how to marry both metal and gemstones together with several torch-less techniques. Students will utilize these techniques to create stunning one of a kind pendant.
During Day 1 of the workshop we will review several types of rivets including standard, flush and tube rivets. During Day 2 of the workshop students will learn how to create turtle prongs to set a cabochon gemstone while utilizing rivets to add dimension and durability to their project. Turtle prongs is a technique used to connect cabochons, enameled works, etc. to a designed piece of metal without a torch. This project will be cut from a sheet of metal and receives the name “turtle” from the animal it resembles before the prongs are bent upwards to hold the gemstone; there are many possible variations for shape.
This class is perfect for starting your own torch-less home studio practice as we will also be covering rivets, textures & finishing techniques. Students will leave class with a sample piece of rivets and a finished pendant.
Materials fee includes a cabochon gemstone, brass and/or copper, however, students can purchase a different stone and sterling silver from the instructor to utilize in their pendant. If purchasing sterling silver and/or a different cabochon from the instructor, the materials will be priced at approximate wholesale cost from the instructor’s personal inventory.
