Upcoming Alternative Firing Techniques: Raku, Saggar, etc.

7-Week class with Jim Van Baalen
Wednesdays, March 5 – April 16, 2025
5:30 pm – 8:30 pm
In the 7 weeks long, Alternative firing class, students will learn about Ruku, Horsehair, Naked Raku, Copper Fuming and Saggar firing. You should expect to have time to make new work, bisque and have multiple raku firing days.
Firing temperatures will range from cone 017 to 04 (roughly 1350F-1950F).
Students are encouraged to create and fire their own work. Because a weekly firing schedule can be hard to keep up with. Upon request, pieces can be provided by the instructor for a modest fee.

MATERIALS TO BRING
- Closed toe shoes
- Long sleeves and pant legs.
- Clothing should be natural materials (i.e. cotton, denim, leather)
- A mask: I recommend students purchase a mask and filters. There are many mask options, and one can choose between mouth and nose or full-face shields. Here are a couple of mask options

Regardless of what mask is chosen, they should use the following filters

Note: We would not allow people who don’t have a mask to directly participate in some firing types (e.g. saggar). So, people can participate without having such a mask, but would be a little limited in what they are allowed to do in the class.
