Upcoming Alternative Firing Techniques – Registration Closed

7-Week class with Jim Van Baalen

Thursdays, June 26 – Aug 7, 2025
5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

In this 7-week Alternative Firing class, students will learn about Raku, Horsehair, Naked Raku, Obvara and Colored Crackle. You should plan to have time to make new work, bisque and have multiple pieces to fire for each of classes 2-7.

Firing temperatures will range from cone 017 to 04 (roughly 1350F-1950F).

Students are encouraged to create and fire their own work. Because a weekly firing schedule can be hard to keep up with, upon request, for a modest fee, premade pieces can be provided by the instructor.

Note: if desired, participants can make some pieces before the class starts to fire in the first couple of class sessions. These pieces should be bisqued. Horsehair and Naked raku techniques are best done on pots that have had Terra Sigillata applied. Here is a video that describes how to prepare a pot for and apply Terra Sigillata.
