Most artists paint in solitude. When I walk into my studio I walk into a space of my own. It is here that the process of painting becomes possible. Being in solitude opens up the space for curiosity, exploration and as a result new visual ideas.

This exhibition is a sampling of work painted in the last ten years. I have discovered that I am formed and informed by both past and present experiences which have infiltrated my work. How could it not? Paintings are, no matter what the subject material, a self portrait. Each painting invariably informs the next. While engaged with the formal concerns of painting, such as composition, color, line and light the painting often goes in a direction I had not foreseen. Sometimes the ineffable happens.

My daily walks in solitude precede my entering the studio. During these walks I am conscious of the sense of strength, vulnerability, beauty and fragility of nature. I am made aware and grateful for the quality of stillness and quiet reflection afforded by these walks in nature.

These paintings are a reflection of the world I inhabit both observed and constructed.
