An Ensemble of Figures and Faces:
Carol Bultsma and Kim Thompson

June 1 – July 7, 2023

Exhibit Opening Reception: Thursday, June 1 from 6-8pm

An Ensemble of Figures and Faces is an exhibition of new works by two local figurative and portrait painters, Carol Bultsma and Kim Thompson.

Bultsma’s work speaks of the universal language of music, depicting musicians and their instruments, and the restorative power it holds to breathe life into us individually as well as collectively.

Thompson’s work focuses on creating bonds of empathy through celebrating life expressed in the faces of humans and animals.

Artist’s Statement

This body of work represents a collection of passionate and talented musicians who inspired me to tell a piece of their story. The universal language of music, while stimulating and forming a connection with the listeners also serves as a buoy in the lives of those who create it. Musician and hearer share a commonality that touches the soul.

Through the process of making these paintings family members were reunited and relationships were healed. “A Light in the Darkness” is about the role music plays in the life of a schizophrenic, providing a calm in the chaos and hope where there is little to be found. These oil paintings share a colorful acrylic base, often influenced by the individuals depicted. As I painted, I listened to music within the different genres represented here, allowing me to further empathize with each of my subjects. Above all, music, and more broadly the arts, causes all of us to feel something; its power has no limits.

Artist’s Statement

I am fascinated by the way people’s faces tell so much about them: where they have been, where they are, and if you look closely, you just might even see where they are going. I love meeting people, but I am really an introvert. My social battery only lasts so long, before I need alone time to recharge. I think that is why I enjoy painting faces so much. I can get to know them on my own time, and by the time the painting is done, I feel very connected. I often use intense colors to express emotions – those of the subject and my own emotions. I usually work from photography so that I can be by myself and focus on the process.

I also enjoy painting pets. I love how much pure joy and happiness they bring to the world. They are not as complicated as humans but that doesn’t mean their faces are boring. I try to capture their personality and warmth in my painting and spread happiness to the viewers.
